Thunking from my gas tank, is there a gremlin in there? 200 1979

My 79 245 quit running about a week ago, and I've been trying to get it started ever since, fuses and relays seem fine. The last 3 or 4 times I have turned the engine over, I have heard a thunking sound coming from the gas tank area, that lasts about a second of so, and starts after I have cranked the engine over for about 4 or 5 seconds. Any thoughts on what that sound could be?
