CAR STARTING THEN DYING.... 200 1980

I had a problem yesterday where my car wouldnt start at all. I cleaned the rotor cap and connections, and it will now start but then die immediately. I have tried this numerous times, with the same results. The battery itself is dead(but not that old maybe 8 mos., to answer a previous question), so I am jump starting the car the entire time. It has gas, and I am almost positive the starter is not the issue. Has anyone dealt with something like this before? I would appreiciate any help. Mike
