I have an 84 manual turbo wagon. It has been sitting for a while since I have last used it, but my mom had lent it out to a friend for a short bit. Well when I went to park the car today I found that the reverse wasn't working so well.
I can put the car into reverse, but when I release the clutch and apply a bit of gas to go, the car doesn't want to go, it feels like the the parking brake is on. It will backup, but it feeels like the car is struggling. Then when I take it out of gear I hear some ominous metal clunking/clanking sounds for a second or two. All other gears operate well, there is some strange noises in the rearend when accelerating hard from a start, but they have always been there and I always attributed them to worn bushings/suspension.
What could be going on here?? What could this friend of the family done to this car? Any help would be greatly appreciated, we were hoping to sell this car, but this looks like one more hurdle. The engine runs great, the turbo is relatively new, but now this reverse issue. Help!!
Thanks,
joe
