Fan clutch?? 200

I've narrowed the growling/grinding sound down to something in-line with the
fan. It is just loudest standing right above the fan area.
What can make such a sound at idle (intermittently)? A water pump wouldn't
do this right? I'm not losing any water either.
If it is something to do with the fan clutch can I continue to drive it.
It'll be a few weeks before I can get to work on it.
