The other day I heard Irv Gordon interviewed on CBC radio. It inspired me to try to get in touch with him, so I dug his number out of Four11.com and left a message for him on his voice mail. The following morning, my phone rang, and the very familiar tones of Irv Himself was on the other end of the line. We spent some time talking Volvos and then we got on to the high mileage list. I had believed that the 245 diesel in Finland was ranked between Irv and I .... However .... and this is according to IRV .... the 245 was in commercial service so therefore does not qualify for the list..... making my old 122 #2 instead of #3 .... Irv and I are going to try to hook up somewhere in eastern North America sometime this summer .... will be interesting to see two vehicles side by side with a total mileage of 3.5 million miles .... probably more miles on those two cars than the total of all the other cars at the meet .
In another 4 years my mortgage will be paid off and a lot of cash will suddenly become free to spend more time on the road... and to spend on maintenance, body work etc. Then the miles will begin to be poured on.
I was talking to the original purchaser of my car yesterday. He confirmed that this is only engine #2. The original B18 went about 1,000,000 miles before putting a rod out through the side of the block ... so this current B20 has about 500,000 miles on it. Current oil consumption is about 1 liter in 960 miles ... to quote Donnie the original owner ... Geez NEW cars use at least that much ... other than a bit of piston slap she is running great..... at 500,000 miles I guess we can forgive her for the piston slap .
