General tire ?'s 200 1987

i just have some general questions about tires and wear. why is it that rear tires wear out faster than fronts? (ok, i guess i should mention that i'm talking about rwd AND fwd) is it because the front tires turn in the direction of the car and the rear tires have to slip a little to turn with it?

also, i've heard from several sources that the tires with the most tread should be put on the back. i understand why for my 240, but why for a front wheel drive car? this just doesn't make sense to me.

thanks for all the help
