In my 1988 740 turbo, I was on the highway, when I felt/heard a muffled "pop",then occasional thumping under my seat. As I slowed, it got more intense, and the throbbing was at a regular interval, respective to the rpm's, etc... I was told this could be the Universal joint gone bad, and was wondering if it isn't the motor mounts, ot transmission mount. Could this be the fabled Tailshaft bushing seal? Hope not the transmission itself! Yes, the gearshift was jumping up and down a bit too. Only happens in drive or reverse, not park.
It got to be very violent - as if someone were hitting the underside of the car with a sledgehammer. Any suggestions or help is appreciated - I can't afford a whole transmission replacement! Thanks! DSG
