Exhaust / Performance Options 700 1988

I just wanted to ask a quick question about the impact of minor exhaust changes on performance. I was looking to boost HP where I can, exhaust being one of the places to start. I do not want to go straight into a 3" exhaust for cost reasons so I was trying to think of a less expensive option. This is what I was thinking - how does it sound?

1. Remove the resonator and replace it with a straight pipe.
2. Replace the stock muffler with a performance one and put on a nice exhaust tip.

Does make sense? If so, does anyone have a muffler to recommend? Also - can anyone guess at a how much HP would increase?
