Whats wrong with my diff? 200

I have a '81 245 GLT and if I attempt a "dragstrip lauch", something in the diff sounds as if it is slipping. It cant be a engine clutch as it happens in first gear and not the higher gears. When the slipping occurs it goes away if I feather the throttle or switch up to second. There is NO WAY it could be tire spin! I once had a Golf GTi that did this right up till spider gears came through the diff case.
