Good evening folks...
Just purchased a beautiful 1984 242 turbo. She's silver on black, and an automatic (AW-71?). I gave up on pursuing the '85 sedan that I was looking at a few weeks ago as the seller refused to budge on the price ($5000!). This coupe has a few more miles (126k), but the paint/interior are almost as good as the 85's @ 84k.
It is mechanically sound. A watercooled turbo was installed in '98, and the blower motor was done 6/01. It does need a few things though: rear bushings, wire harness, motor mounts, and a rad. I have a good wire harness parted from an '83 turbo in the garage - are they compatible? If so, that will save me a few dollars. The shop that did the pre-purchase inspection quoted me 4 1/2 hrs. labor to install the harness, $400 for new trailing arm and torque rod bushings (including an 'upgrade' to poly. tr bushings), and an hour of labor + parts costs (did not specify) for the motor mounts. I will probably do the radiator, waterpump and timing belt (as well as basic tune-up items) myself. Oh, and the sunroof does not work, but as of now am not sure exactly what is wrong with it.
What really sold me on this car was its excellent physical condition. At any rate, that is how I rationalize spending this kind of money on an 18 year old car. ;-)
