knock sensor corrosion 700 1989

For the 2nd time in 9 months the check engine light came on in my girlfriend's car and I retrieved the knock sensor code from the OBD. There's nothing wrong with the knock sensor, it's just that the sensor's connectors get a healthy buildup of corrosion. All I have to do is clean the connector with a wire brush and it's good to go again. But since this car runs like crap when this happens (timing gets WAY retarded), and girlfriend WAY overreacts to the little yellow light coming on when she's driving alone late at night, I'd prefer to avoid this happening again. Any tips on preventing corrosion buildup on electrical connectors like this? For some reason none of the the other connectors on this car seem to have any problem with corrosion.
