Which to buy, a 240 or 740? 200

I wanna buy a Volvo! I am a total newbie, and mechanically disinclined.

I am partial to the 240 sedans, for I must admit, the looks. My husband wants to get a wagon so he can haul his upright bass around, but Elvis' bassist used to strap his to the top of a caddy so I figure we can do the same with the sedan. Anyway, what I am seeing in my price range is 740s and 240s, from 1984-1991. I am partial to as few computer chips as possible so that a real mechanic can fix it for me. Should I steer clear of post-1990 models? Are the older ones better? Do Turbos die earlier? and what exactly is the difference between a 240 and a 740?

Thanks, I know there are alot of Brickheads out there that know everything about these cars, and I appreciate your advice!
