Air Mass Meter - Do they go bad? How hard to install? 200 1987

A fellow brickhead came up with a likely diagnosis of my "stalling" problem, that being the Air Mass Meter in my '87 245 DL acting up. I understand that the unit has some very sensitive "wires" that actually sense the airflow, and somehow send a signal to adjust the fuel mixture (is that correct?). My question is two-fold: Can AMM "wear out"? or do they sometimes just need to be re-calibrated or adjusted? and, How hard is the removal/installation (for someone who is fairly handy doing brake jobs, exhaust system replacements, replacing balljoints, etc.)? Your thoughts are appreciated, and have a great weekend! Jeff
