Temp (from vents) is either Hot or Cold...I want WARM air 200 1990

I have a 1990 240DL, and am having trouble controlling the temperature in the cabin.

When I position the temp lever in the middle, only hot (very hot) air comes out, and when the temp lever is far to the left, very cold air comes out.

I can't position the lever to allow only WARM air. My cabin is always ice cold or very hot. I have to fiddle with the lever all the time.

Help!
