Brake Failure Light on 1991 244DL 200

My Brake Failure Light keeps coming on sporatically. When I'm at a stop, it's not on, but when I accelerate, it comes on. Then I can hit the brakes and it goes off. What do I need to look for? Brake Failure sounds quite bad so I want to find out what's going on. Haven't had a chance to check brake fluid.
