My '89 sux - overheats when a/c on and ideling 200 1989

My '89 has been running consistently under normal operating temp. I can drive it with the a/c on and it runs okay. If I let it idle with the a/c on the temp starts going up. This weekend I did a flush and fill and put in a new thermostat but I'm still having the same symptoms. What should I do next?

By the way the Haynes manual says to torque the bolts on the t-stat housing to 80 lbs. It seems a little excessive for those small nuts. The torque wrench I have is hard to get in that tight spot - plus I had to use a drive adapter to use the 10mm socket. Is it okay to just tighten the hell out of 'em? I checked for leaks and had none.
