erratic sensor 200 1989

Greetings,

Lately my 1989 AT wagon developed a strange problem: The gasoline level meter has a mind of its own. Sometimes it slowly drifts up and down around the correct position, sometimes it goes all the way to the bottom and stays there for days. Has anyone seen that before?
