crank and crank and crank then start, almost every time 700 1990

My 1990 745 GL (8V non-turbo) has always seemed to crank longer than usual before catching and starting. I never worried until recently when it seems to sometimes crank even longer before catching and running, and on rare sporadic occasions it'll just crank and crank. I seem to hear the fuel pump when I turn the key to "run". Any ideas, are these conditions possibly related?
