exhaust leak at cat/muffler pipe connection... cause? 700

1985 745t

after having my cat and exhaust manifold replaced about 6 months ago my brick developed a slight, putting leak from the male/female link between the cat and the exhaust pipe (one pipe sleeves around the other, and the outer pipe has a slit to "widen it" to take the narrower pipe).

The clamp on this joint is a U clamp with two nuts to tighten it down. I tried shifting the position of the U clamp up a bit to provide a better seal and tightening it down more, but it didn't do much and I didn't want to tighten it so far I stripped the threads.

I read about a gasket at the cat converter inlet in a parts listing... is that this junction? Is it possible a gasket there is missing or misaligned, allowing a little exhaust to push out? The pipe doesn't look too new but it is in good condition.

Basically I need to know if this is just a wear thing or if I can acually fix it. I don't notice the sound much from teh driver's side, but when I'm on the passenger side it is REALLY irritating.

thanks,
rt
