960 turbo starting/cold running problem 900 1991

Please can somebody help me.
Recently my car has developed a starting problem, intermitantly it will start and sound very "lumpy". It will idle ok but when you engage D it will lose power and stall. After this it is impossible to start it again.
By accident I found a fix of sorts. If I remove all the injector power feeds and crank the engine, it will run momentarily and cut out. If I the reconnect all the feeds and crank it's ok!! Now when it is running there is a noticable lack of power, this is more apparent from stand still / pulling away
I have been to a Volvo garage and all they seem to do is replace the engine temperature sensor, which is located under the inlet manifold the car works and then they stop there. I am sure that the sensor is not the problem.
Can anyone shed any light onto this problem or give me an idea where to look next.
Thanks
Jamie
