Heavy intermittent ticking&power surging 700

Can anybody help me?
I have a 1989 740GL ,B230f with 190000 km's on it.
This car periodically will start to tick loudly and the tach moves around as it surges. It's not the ABS because it doesn't happen when the brakes are on!
I am thinking it's the 87 octane gas i'm using!!
any thoughts?
