tach question 200 1989

I just put in my tach, and when i turn on my car, the tach is at 0. the car IS running, however, my tach stays at 0. shouldn't it be at 1 or at least some rpms? if this isn't how the tach is supposed to work please tell me how i can fix this problem. I placed the red/white wire to the left prong on the bottom of the back of the tach. this is the correct placement, right? any help would be appreciated.
