Loud clack clack clack noise...help! 200 1981

Hi,
My brother came home in his '81 240 today and it was making a weird clacking noise. I got him to start it up again (in evening) and it sounded really loud in the engine bay. I then revved the car up a bit and the noise got really loud and it sounded like something probably broke. I turned the engine off right away of course. Could this be the compressor clutch? It sound like it was from near the power steering pump. The steering has been kind of jittery lately. What else could it be??
