temp gauge shoots to right with a/c on and at idle for about 5 mins. 700

what is causing this problem. it was about 90 degrees and i had a/c on and was waiting to pick someone up and i noticed the needle was getting to close to the right. when i drove the needle would eventually go back to the far left.
