many cranks, does the 'priming' test actually work? 700

in the past few months, i've seen a few posts about excessive cranking from a cold start being related to the fuel pump check valve.

some people posted suggestions that to see if this was the problem, to turn the key to the 2 position and off a few times, which would cause the pump to prime.

someone then responded to that suggestion once saying that our Volvos don't prime, and that it wouldn't do anything.

so now i'm wondering what is correct? i noticed yesterday that when i cranked, it took a LOT of cranks to get it starting. the battery is perfectly fine, as the cranks were strong, but it just seemed like fuel wasn't getting there to get it started. it took somewhere between 7-10 cranks to get it going. i've also tried the 'priming' thing by turning to 2 and off a few times after i hear the whirring, and that doesn't seem to have decreased cranking any.

any suggestions?
