Vacuum Hoses - where? 700

I hear a lot of talk about vacuum hoses. WHere are these things? Is that just a term for any hoses connected to the intake hoses/throttle body/intake manifold? The reason I ask is that my idle is really bad. It is very lopey and all over the place from 500 to 1100 rpms or so - my whole car shakes violently once in a while because it gets so low (never stalls out though). My engine mounts are fine - I don't think it's my fuel injectors because it's not a gradual thing that built up to this, it just all of a sudden started happenning. I just cleaned the throttle body a few weeks ago so it can't be that. Does this sound like an IAC valve problem? Is it easy to clean? Any ideas or opinions are much appreciated.
