boost gauge - '94 940t 900

I need to install a boost gauge to replace the stock non-calibrated gauge. Is it okay to T into the existing sauge under the dash or do I need to connect the new gauge in the engine compartment. If the latter, where's the best place to go through the firewall and where's the best place to make the actual connection. Thanks in advance for any help.
