bypass dryer/rec. a.c. comp. works, low refrigerant right?

Hi all,

So my a.c. that I had converted to r134 2 years ago stopped working. When I had the conversion I was told there was a slight leak in compressor, I passed on compressor and a.c. worked fine for 2 years. The other day the compressor wasn't kicking in so I bypassed the dryer/receiver and it started working. This does mean the refrigerant is low right? I'd like to get a bit more out of this before I have to replace comp.

thanks
