Loss of power during boost. 700 1989

I was driving along doing about 65 mph in my 765T about a week ago, when I heard/felt a thump and suddenly lost power. The engine was still running, but it wasn't moving me very fast. I pulled off at the next exit, and did a quick check. The engine revved fine, and on side streets everything seemed fairly normal. As soon as I got back on the highway, I noticed a loss of power when accelerating. I stopped and checked the tranny fluid, and it was low. I added some, then set out again. Same problem. Concerned that I managed to damage the tranny, I took it in to a shop that I trust for tranny work. They repaired a leak and replaced the kickdown cable (both issues that I knew about and needed doing), and said that it sounded like a plugged catalytic converter. Made sense to me; it acted like a plugged exhaust. So I ordered up a replacement from IPD, and had it installed. Unfortunately I still have the same issue. When I take it out, and it tries to go into boost, I lose power. If I stay below boost and don't use the turbo, it seems fine. Almost makes me think that I have a turbo problem. But, on the other hand, when I look underneath after running for awhile there is an exhaust leak just before the cat. Makes me think that something further down the line is plugged. I'm not sure which way to go. Any ideas would be great.
Thanks!
Eric
