car starts, then shuts off 200 1989

big problem happened yesterday. I turned on my 240, the rpms rose, then fell till the point where my car just stalled and shut off. tried to give it gas, instead the rpms would get up to about 3, then begin to decrease, even with my foot to the floor. anyways, i got it towed, and konw i'm just waiting to see what my mechanic says. does anyone have any clue as to whats going on here?
