Oil Filter Adaptor Leak 700

I am getting ready to fix this common leak on my 87 740 Turbo.
Can anyone tell me what size socket will i need to remove the adaptor from the block ? Read on another posting that it is 1 1/4 IN. Is it not supposed to be metric ?
Any other helpful sugesstions?
