240 rookie with some electrical questions 200

Hello all,
Let me preface this by saying I have ordered the Bentley manual, but it hasn't arrived yet.

I recently bought an 86 240 non-turbo wagon. As with all used cars, I got a couple of surprises afetr I brought it home. The first was that after a couple of short trips, the battery completely discharged. There is no volt guage in this car and the idiot light didn't. I looked into it and saw the main bolt that mounts the alternator to the block is broken, so the alt belts were loose. I'll have to take a lot of parts off to get to the problem area, so in the mean time, I snugged up the alt as much as I could with the adjuster side of the mount. At the same time I noticed what appeared to be a wire (field?) broken off the top back alt terminal. I put a new terminal on it and plugged ti back in. The alternator now spins, but I can't keep a charge on the battery. Did I throw somewthing off when I connected up that field wire?

Next, Nothing registers on the heat guage. Probable faulty guage, sender or broken connection?

Next, No odometer, erratic speedometer. Probable cause?

Thank you for your input and advice,

Bert
