very weird thing happened today... 700

I have no idea WHAT happened to my car today, but I'll try to describe it and maybe this has happened to someone else before...
When I was pulling out of my driveway (not backing out) I took off the e-brake and put car into first gear. As soon as I got about 3 feet, my car made a big clunk and it felt like the emergency brake went on and made the car jerk to a stop. It totally sounded like something got a hold of the brakes and put them on all of a sudden. the car would not go forward. I put the car in reverse, it went ok. Then i went forward again and the car went about 10 feet before the clunk and no more going forward. Does anyone have ANY idea what this is?
