High Fuel Consumption 700 1991

My 740 was having some take up problems, sluggish and slow when I discovered that one of the spark plugs, (in fact all ) hadn't been changed for 10yrs. (still Volvo originals), so I lashed out and bought a new set of four champions and no problems. However, since changing the plugs my fuel consumption has gone through the roof, true I was running on three before, but all logic tells me that I should improve milage not vice versa, anyone had, heard of this?? Please advise it's costing me a mint in fuel!!!
