My '82 non-intercooled 245GLT M46 revved much quicker and was redlined at 6,000 rpm in comparison to my '84 intercooled 245GLT with automatic, which, incidentally, is redlined at 6,500 rpm. I've heard tidbits here and there that the intercooled versions used a heavier flywheel which made for a smoother, if slower-revving drivetrain. Is there any truth to this? Also, I can't figure out where the extra 500 revs come from in the intercooled version, since they're redlined higher, at 6,500rpm. Any theories?
