AW71 no 2nd gear? 700

An odd thing happened on my way home tonight.

Usually, since the climb up to my house is done at around 25mph, I keep it in "2" on the gear selector so I can stay out of the boost.

But for some reason, the transmission wouldn't stay in 2nd, instead it would just shift into D as it usually would. If I put it into "1", then it would kick down two gears into first. What would cause this?
