overdrive question and such...new to volvo 200 1993

We got our first volvo a couple days ago and the next day weird things began to happen. It is a 93 240 automatic wagon. We do not have a manual yet and are not mechanically inclined at all. We have already grown very fond of this car but....
First thing is the service light comes on when we start it up and turns off after about 5 minutes. Figure this can be many things but if it was dangerous another warning light may have come on so I haven't been so worried.

Now the yucky thing. We were driving on the freeway and the orange arrow came on and the car started driving like a truck. Loud and rough. This light has not gone off since and it is still driving like a truck.
I have read through the past messages and seem to be getting very confused. I am getting that the orange arrow light means the overdrive is off?? But if it is off why is it driving like a truck? The overdrive button doesn't do anything when we push it(but did yesterday). I tried to listen to the overdrive button to see if it made a click under the car when we pushed it but did not hear anything. I looked at the fuse box and didn't see anything related to overdrive or transmission listed on the fuse box cover.

Also saw the post about saudering and don't have a sauder gun but may need to invest in one. And there are no screws in our shifter to get the base off to check wires so how does it come off?

I know I sound pretty darn ignorant. Please excuse me I just do not know crud about cars but want to figure out what is wrong with this poor car.

Thank you

Aphrodite
