front end rattle 700 1987

there's an annoying -- if not alarming! -- rattle that comes from the front end, driver's side, and only when driving on irregular pavement. it goes away as soon as i apply the brake. i removed the wheel, but could not find any loose parts or fasteners. anyone have any ideas? thanks!
