Electrical oddity to share 200 1986

I just replaced the alternator in my kid's 86 244 with a good one from the salvage yard. Here's the strange part. Whatever was causing the old alternator to not charge was also causing the alternator warning light to be completely non functional. It wouldn't even light during the light test when starting the car.

I'm not sure why this is, but it sure seems to be a pretty significant design flaw. Does anyone know why this is and how to get around it? I would have saved a lot of money if I had known the alternator was toast BEFORE the car stalled and got towed by the police.
