740 / 940 What's the difference? 700

I'm looking for another used Volvo... having run my trusty 1980 245 for 14 years to a well deserved end.

Having read through hundreds of the previous posts on all the forums... I'm curious about one thing. What is the main difference between the 740 wagons and the 940 wagons?

It seems from some posts that during some years, the two model lines are almost identical. It seems that there are many more 740's available than 940's. I'm leaning toward the 940... mostly because I intend to keep this car for another 14 years too... and it seems a more recent vintage.

Any enlightenment is much appreciated.
