Switch at clutch pedal arm stop 700 1985

Hello, I have an 85 740 GLE with an M46 transmission

I noticed that there is a black contact switch that touches near the top of clutch pedal on the rear side of it. The switch is mounted on the metal stop that stops the clutch pedal from coming up too far, so that when the clutch is depressed the switch is not contacted, but when the clutch pedal is let go, the switch is contacted. Is this important? My switch is making an awful noise when i depress my clutch pedal and i wanna axe it. I can't think of any reason why the car would need to electronically know if the clutch pedal is depressed or not. So, yea or nea on the ixnay of the itchsway?

Trevor
