Exhaust Mounting Paste 200

Hi all,

I just recieved a new stock exhaust system from IPD for my 82 240 (299,00 miles- pushing for 300). Typical with everything from the cat back. I have never replaced the exhaust, and am not intimidated to do so, however, what is the exhaust mounting paste used for? Is is to air tight the joints between pipes?
