Power steering troubleshooting tips? 200 1986

The power steering on my '86 245 GL went out today, and boy is it hard to turn without it! I checked the fluid level and it is fine, although it does appear to have been leaking a decent amount (the hoses were caked with quite a bit of gunk).

Any suggestions on how I begin troubleshooting and fixing this problem? My arms are getting sore!
