Desperate...Need Help........Engine problem 700 1988

Once again I'm calling on this great community of Volvo enthusiasts for help and in doing so I'd like to thank each and everyone of you in advance for any help you can give me.

I have a 760 turbo wagon that was running great, no sign of any problems whatsoever.
I was in town and shut it off for about 5 min. when I went to restart it it was hard starting, but did start. I put it in drive and went to pull away and it stalled, it had no power whatsoever. I was able to restart it and as long as I kept the RPM below 1500 it would pull away. If I depressed the excellerator so that the engine would climb above 1500 RPM then the car would stall. It also seemed to stall out if it had to work at all such as climbing small inclines, as I would come up to one and the car started to slow down I had to ease my foot off of the accellerator and then downshift the automatic to 2nd and then 1st or low gear. On the level the fastest I could go was about 45 kmh. I managed to drive it home like this for 25 km and on the way I purchased gas line antifreeze (in case I had got water with my last purchase of gas) and a fuel injector cleaner. They were both added at the beginning of the trip home so had time to go through the system. I shut the car off when I got home but now it will not start at all.
I noticed on the way home that I could hear the secondary fuel pump working every few seconds bringing the fuel pressure up to the operating pressure for the injectors so I don't think it's a fuel problem as far as fuel pumps or their relays are concerned, but in trying to get the engine to go above 1500 RPM it was acting like a fuel problem. When the gas pedal was depressed the engine made a sound similar to a carberatored engine running without an air breather but on a much lower key or level.

My dilemma...............There are no mechanics in my area that are familiar with Volvo's. The nearest dealership is about 300 km away. I'm on a disability pension so have very little disposible income.
What I'm trying to acomplish here is to try and save my mechanic time in finding the probable cause of the car not running therefore saving me money on it's repair. Because it just quit running without any warning of any problem I'm hoping that it's something simple that others have experienced and can now pass on the corrective information to me.

As I've said in the past when I've needed help and received it here....Thank you everyone that has contributed to this site. The help and suggestions are really apreciated. Thanks again.

********** SPECIAL NOTE**********

My wife informed me that about two weeks ago she had a funny thing happen to her upon starting the car, it started good but it went into a high idle mode (about 2000 RPM ). She tried to kick it down with a quick hit on the excellorator pedal but all that did was that the car went into it's normal idle for about 1 or 2 seconds, then regained it's high idle. She said that she did this a second time and before the car could go to fast idle again she put it in gear and drove it, she said that when she stopped at a stop street in town she put it in neutral to see if it had settled down and it was fine then.
She said that this only happened to her twice and because at all other times it was normal she forgot to mention it to me.
I have no idea if this will have any bearing on things as they stand right now but I though just in case it does I'd better mention it.

Thank you everyone that has responded to my post. You have no idea how much I appreciate the responces.
