The 88 740 turbo developed a hot start problem about eight weeks ago and all I've done is throw parts and money at it, and it's exactly where it was eight weeks ago. I've replaced both fuel pumps, fuel relay (twice), idle motor, coil, computer, temp sender, and finally the distributor. Coil wire was also changed. At the same time it started having hot start problems it also started with an erratic idle at times. It would idle fast even when warmed up, it would tend to pull at traffic lights and when put in park it would jump up to about 1600 before dropping back to 1100. It normally idles at 900, in and out of gear. I've noticed that if I shut it down while it's idling fast, that's when the hot start problem more than likely occurs. You can crank on it until the cows come home with no luck or let it cool off for about an hour and you'll get a start. If you put the coil wire and force the spark to jump, you will get a restart. My thinking now is that the fast idle is caused by a timing problem and it's not resetting. Maybe by pulling the coil wire you are not only causing a hotter spark, but maybe retarding the timing a bit. During the hot start problem I do have primary ignition and fuel pump pulses. The wiring seems to be in excellent shape and moving wires and plugs change nothing. The plug for the temp sender is bad and the two wires are just plugged into it. Could this make a difference, the temp works fine?
