speedo flutuates up and down 700 1987

When I dove into my pool my speedo went down.... But seriously I could`nt resist that one. When I accelerate my speedometer goes down instead of up untill I let off the gas then it bounces back up to normal. The previous owner admitted to having run the diff dry, and it howls slightly when I am on the gas and quiets down when coasting. Could the speedo problem be related to the ring gear being loose and moving the sensor pick-up out of alignment? Any theories about the second problem would be appreciated, the first promlem was a broken draw string.
