Diagnosis for Fan Relay and Temp Sensor 900

'95-945 n/a
While letting the car idle for a minute in the driveway while opening the garage door after the drive home I heard the whoosh of the electric fan turning on. Great, it's working fine. We have had several hot days. Friday morning after starting the car, cold engine, the fan turned on as the car was started. I checked it after I got to work the fan was off. It seems obvious that the relay is sticking in the closed position, maybe?

How is the diagnosis done to determine if relay or the temperature switch is bad? I followed the fan wires back to the relay located just behind the passenger side headlights, looks like there are two clips that hold it in. I didn't try hard but I couldn't budge it. I am not sure about the location for the temp sensor switch though.
