I changed my motor mounts in a Holiday Inn parking lot!!! 200 1982

Hello,

Just wanted to relay a recent encounter of mine to you all. We were on our way back to Wisconsin from Florida. We were just finishing up 14 hours of hot highway driving. I was drivng the last shift for the night from Chattanooga to Nashville. I started to notice wierd vibration coming through the steering column. I knew something was wrong but being extremely tired I decided to look at it in the morning.

I pulled the car onto a curb and crawled under to find a completely shredded passanger motor mount. hmmm... After calling 25 parts stores I located a set of mounts in Chattanooga. I proceeded to rent a car, drive 1.25 hours to purchase the motor mounts, bottle jack, and oil change pan. BTW the bottle jack was on sale for $9.99!!!!

Changing the motor mounts was a breeze, the passanger mount was about half of the original thickness and the plate on the drivers mount had seperated from the rubber. Negotiating the power steering pump hoses was tricky and good for a few bloody knuckles.

All told I was out <$100 for the mounts, rental car, and bottle jack... BTW a dealer in Nashville wanted $39.50 for each mount (+labor).

I attribute the failure to the motor mount being oil-soaked and the repeated shifting of the trans from O.D. to 3rd as we plowed through the mountains.

I'll be changing the transmission mount soon!

Matt
