I just took off the head from my 93 245 (140K miles) to get ready for a cross country trip this summer. I figured a valve job and new seals would avoid trouble..the machinist just phoned me and said that 3 of the 4 exhaust valves were "burned out". Luckily I had a spare B230 head from an 89 that only had 100K miles on it before corrosion killed it. He is going to remove the valves from the spare head,grind them and install them on my 93 head.
What I need to know (I sound like Mulder)is:
1. What causes exhaust valve burnout?
2. What can be done to prevent it?
3. Is there any hope?
