Rear brakes wearing faster than front and funny brake pedal feel. Ideas?? 900

I have a 92 964 w/ 112k miles. Four years ago I had both front and rear brakes (and rotors) replaced. Now I had the rear brakes replaced (and rotor's again) but the front were fine. I always thought the front wore faster than the rear. The brake pedal feels spongy however, my mechanic (private shop but I think very good and honest) agrees they feel weird but has bled them twice and tells me it doesn't quite feel like air. You have to press harder and there is more pedal travel than I think there should be. My guy is stumped and so am I.

Could the back brakes be engaging before the front thus causing this weird brake feel? Has anyone have any ideas? My last resort is to go to the dealer, which I have not had real good luck with. I fear I will spend $1000 and it will still be the same.

Thanks in advance for any and all help.

John
